Hundreds Of Kentucky Nonprofits Face Loss Of StatusPADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Hundreds of small nonprofit organizations in Kentucky are have not filed tax returns in the last three years and are facing a mid-October deadline to seek relief from the government. The Internal Revenue Service list of noncompliant groups contains 141 pages of organizations from Kentucky. The listing shows about 160 religious and civic groups, youth sports associations and business development organizations just for Paducah, Benton, Mayfield and Murray. Many are dormant or defunct. Former IRS agent and Paducah tax preparer Ray McLennan told the Paducah Sun that the IRS is "trying to clear the books" of organizations who didn't have to file because of their size. Organizations that miss the Oct. 15 deadline will have their tax-exempt status revoked. The IRS plans to publish a list of revocations in early 2011. In the past, only nonprofit groups with more than $25,000 in annual revenue had to file federal tax returns. That changed with the Pension Protection Act of 2006. The law required all tax-exempt organizations, other than churches and church-related organizations, to file annual returns. Those not filing for the past three years will automatically lose their tax-exempt status if they don't meet the deadline. Included on the list of groups not complying is the Kiwanis Club of South Paducah, which has sponsored the McCracken County Fair for nearly 50 years. The 2010 fair took in more than $30,000 for youth programs and charities. "Let there be no doubt left to the public that we'll file the right forms on time," said Tommy Brown, fair chairman and Kiwanis Club secretary. Paducah Newspapers Employees Association, a nonprofit organization of The Paducah Sun and WPSD-TV employees, is also on the list. Money from vending machines and room-rental fees support cabins at Kentucky Lake. PNEA President Jesse Rogers, the Sun's production manager, said he received an earlier IRS notice about the situation but had forgotten to follow up. Rogers said he would file the appropriate form. Paducah Hospitality Association, a nonprofit group of restaurant and lodging operators, also made the list. Board chairman Bob Hoppmann, owner of the Pasta House Co. restaurant, said the association was aware of the problem and planned to correct it.
